Different Hair Types Can Fortunately All Benefit from Hair Transplantation

Different racial and ethnic groups tend to have different types of hair. Thus, one question we get commonly at Silicon Valley Hair Institute is about hair transplant for different hair types, ranging from straight to curly, black to blonde, and so on and so forth. Different hair types can fortunately be treated by hair transplantation. All types of hair transplantation, including African American hair transplants.

Well, the good news is that we can carry out a hair transplant for anyone, including hair transplantation for tight curly hair as is typical among persons of African descent.

Hair loss is not selective. Some people suffer from it and others don’t. Some people have thinning hair. Other people have bald areas. Still, others have totally bald heads.

Losing hair also affects people in different ways. Some people simply don’t care, regarding it as “just one of those things”. Others feel uncomfortable about it. Still, others feel embarrassed and ashamed. Actually, there is no need to feel embarrassed or ashamed because it is not a matter of personal choice, but if it makes someone feel that way, then today we have the technology to solve the problem. It’s called hair transplantation.

Different people have different types of hair, as we said, and African Americans usually have curly hair. All types can be transplanted, and the hair transplant can either be carried out by the surgeon manually, or today it can be carried out by a robot. Obviously individuals vary – and the best course of action is to meet with the Doctor and have him evaluate your hair loss and options.

When a hair transplant is carried out manually, the surgeon will remove a strip of hair at the back of the head which is then divided up into tiny follicles containing between one and four hairs. These are then transplanted into the recipient area of the head. Unfortunately, this procedure does leave a scar at the back of the head where the strip was removed. However, this is not an issue unless you want to wear your hair short, because it will be covered up by longer hair.

No Visible Scar from Robotic Hair Transplantation

But the hair transplant can also be carried out by the ARTAS robot, and this has the benefit of leaving no visible scar whatsoever. The robot will select groups of hair follicles containing between one and four hairs from different parts of the head and then transplant them individually into the recipient area. This is particularly good for hair transplantation for African Americans because it makes harvesting follicular units of curly hair much easier.

Not only that, but the survival rate of the harvested follicular units is better than hair transplanted manually. Another advantage of this hair transplantation for African Americans is that there is less pain and downtime after the procedure.

Yet another benefit is that the robot will transplant the hair so that it exactly matches the direction, angle, and elevation of any existing hairs in the recipient area, thus producing the best aesthetics.

If you are considering a hair transplant, our Dr. Miguel Canales is happy to offer all patients a free consultation when he can answer all your questions. He works with all hair types for hair transplantation, and both hair transplant for men and hair transplant for women here in the Bay Area.
